INDEPENDENT ACTIVITY LIST

• Because these independent activities are not organized by the JMPTA, the Moraga School District and JMPTA assume no liability, and therefore, parent permission slips are not required.

• Students that wish to participate in an Independent Activity should coordinate directly with the contact person for the organization.

• For optimum enjoyment and safety, we strongly recommend student Volunteers are accompanied by a supervising parent or guardian when participating in activities outside of Moraga.

• To receive credit for your service hours, complete the Independent Activity Form, have it signed by a representative at the independent community service agency when you volunteer, and turn it in to the JM Office.

This Senior Assisted Living community has various opportunities for youth volunteers.

Alameda County Community Food Bank (Oakland) - www.accfb.org
Saturday volunteers screen and sort donated food. Shifts are 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and  
1 p.m.-4 p.m. each Saturday we work; call or e-mail at least a week in advance to sign up. Please check their website for upcoming Saturday Sort dates. Kids 10 and older are welcome (supervised by an adult) and you must wear closed-toed shoes.

Animal Rescue Foundation (Walnut Creek) - www.arf.net/help/volunteer.html
Tony La Russa's Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF) saves the lives of countless animals each year whose time has run out in public shelters. ARF's team of trained volunteers and expert staff make sure every animal receives proper nutrition, medical evaluation and treatment, training and lots of love as they await their new home.

Bay Area Crisis Nursery (Concord) - www.bacn.info
The purpose of the Bay Area Crisis Nursery is to prevent abuse and neglect of children by providing support to families who are in stress or crisis.  Their primary service is providing a warm, loving, homelike environment for children ages birth through eleven years of age by offering 24 hour residential care.

Blue Star Moms (Danville) - www.bluestarmoms.org
Their mission is to support our troops through programs such as Care Packages, Operation Postcard, Veterans Outreach, Wounded Soldiers and Gold Star Families.

Books for the Barrios (Concord) - www.booksforthebarrios.com
Reuse discarded textbooks, library books, school supplies, learning aids, games, puzzles, etc. to remote islands in the Philippines.

Elizabeth House (College Ave. area of Oakland) - www.oakehouse.org/index.html
Elizabeth House is a transitional residence for women with children who have experienced homelessness, violence, addiction or poverty. Volunteers are needed  for the following:

• Babysitting for weekly parent meetings - Mondays from 6:30-8pm
• Babysitting  - give the moms a break by babysitting an hour or two a month (make your own schedule)
• Tutoring & Homework Club – their most urgent volunteer need! There are anywhere from 8-15 school-age children looking for homework help. Volunteers can come at times that work for them to provide one-on-one tutoring with an individual child, or come at the prearranged "Homework Club" times to work within a group setting. Currently, Homework Club meets on Monday and Wednesdays from 4-5:15pm

Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano (Concord) - www.foodbankccs.org
The Mission of the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano is to alleviate hunger by providing an efficient, coordinated system for collecting and distributing food that reduces food waste and increases public awareness regarding hunger and food security issues in Contra Costa and Solano Counties. Inspect, sort and box barrels of canned/packaged food during 3 hour shifts.   Contact  Sharon Zeppegno at 925-676-7543 ext.209 to sign up for weekday afternoons or Saturdays. The Food Bank is located at 4010 Nelson Avenue in Concord.

There are many ways to volunteer with Glide Memorial. The fastest way is to serve a meal. Glide serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. Use the link listed above to sign up for a shift or explore other volunteer opportunities. 

MedShare (San Leandro) - www.MedShare.org
MedShare volunteers sort and box donated medical supplies for shipment to healthcare facilities in our local communities and throughout the world.   Sorting sessions are held on most Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at our warehouse facility in San Leandro. Wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes. They accept volunteers from ages 8 and up.  Any volunteers up to age 12 must be accompanied by a parent. A short orientation and training session must be completed at the first time you volunteer.

Monument Crisis Center (Concord) - www.monumentcrisiscenter.org
The Monument Crisis Center is a non-profit community based organization that provides assistance to at- risk families, children, seniors and individuals in Central Contra Costa County. The mission of the center is to provide food, offer help and referrals in crisis situations and promote community awareness of needs and available resources.  Check their website for volunteer information. 

Oakland Zoo (Oakland) - www.oaklandzoo.org
The mission of the Oakland Zoo is to inspire respect for and stewardship of the natural world while providing a quality visitor experience.  Volunteers are needed on the 3rd Saturday of every month for the Spruce Up the Zoo project.  Contact the Oakland Zoo or Hands On Bay Area (www.handsonbayarea.org) for more information.

Redwood Regional Park (Oakland) -  www.ebparks.org
The East Bay Regional Park District encompasses all of Alameda and Contra Costa counties.  On Redwood Road, just a few miles over the ridge from Moraga, is a hidden redwood forest of 150-foot coast redwoods.  The Park needs volunteers on a monthly basis for various projects.  To volunteer contact the Volunteer Center of the East Bay at www.helpnow.org/index.html.

Salt Pond Restoration Project at Eden Landing Ecological Reserve:
The South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project is the largest tidal wetland restoration project on the West Coast. This 600-acre former salt pond is being restored to a thriving tidal wetlands which will increase habitat for endangered birds and fish.  Due to the sensitive nature of the restoration site, space is limited and RSVP is requested.  No experience necessary, all ages welcome. Gloves, tools and all instruction are provided.

Shelter, Inc. (Martinez) - www.shelterincofccc.org
Shelter, Inc.'s goal is to end homelessness in Contra Costa County through three service areas: Preventing Homelessness, Promoting Self-Sufficiency, and Providing Permanent Housing.  Check their website for volunteer information. 

Smiley Dog Rescue (Oakland) - www.smileydogrescue.org
Volunteers are needed to handle dogs at adoption events in Lafayette, Pleasant Hill, Oakland or El Cerrito on Saturdays from 1-4pm. Check their website for volunteer information.

Walnut Creek Open Space Foundation (Walnut Creek) - www.wcosf.org
The Walnut Creek Open Space Foundation works to preserve and enhance Walnut Creek's nearly 3000 acres of open space. This volunteer opportunity involves planting native plants in Heather Farms Park to make this area a better habitat for plants and animals.  Volunteers should be at least 12 years old and should wear sturdy shoes. Bring drinking water if needed.

White Kitty Foundation (Walnut Creek) - www.whitekittyfoundation.org
White Kitty is an organization that seeks to shelter, rehabilitate, and nurture animals, regardless of condition, and ultimately find them a home where they can flourish.
Volunteers are needed to assist in handling small dogs and cats at White Kitty’s adoptions sites. Adoptions are held on Saturdays and sometimes Sundays from 12:00 to 3:00 PM at several pet stores in the Walnut Creek area. Volunteers must be at least 13 years old.  Check their website for volunteer  information.
