Submission Requirements for
Musical Composition

Entry Due Date: Thursday, March 4, 2010

Definition:

A musical composition entry may be for voice, instruments, or a combination of voice and instruments.  Lyrics may or may not be included in vocal compositions.  The entry can incorporate such techniques as MIDI sequencer software or synthesized performance.  It must be played in real time and prepared by hand or on computer paper appropriate for instrumentation and voicing.  The entry may not include imported or downloaded MIDI or other source files. (click here for "Special Tips for Music Entries”)

Judging Criteria:

Whether an entry uses a variety of techniques or a simple approach, it will be judged on artistic merit, creativity, originality, and execution.  It should be fresh and innovative.  The quality of the composition is more important than the quality of the performance.

Submission Requirements:
__

Students must submit two (2) copies of EITHER:

1. A written description of the musical composition, OR
2. A musical notation manuscript of the composition.

The written description or notation will aid the listener and serve as a guide through the piece.  The written description, if used, must be typed.  The musical notation, if used, may be a handwritten score or printed off musical software.

__

The entry may not exceed five (5) minutes.

__

Entries should be no larger than 11”x14”.  Band and orchestra compositions may be 11”x16”.  Do not mount or bind the scores.

__

Submit three (3) audiocassettes or CD recordings of the composition that are playable in a stereo or CD player. Pack in a large envelope labeled on the front with your name, phone number and contest category.

__

Students are not required to perform their own compositions.  The work may be performed by others or recorded through MIDI software.

__

Joint submissions, by two or more people, are not eligible.

Special Tips For Music Entries:

JM Studio: Mr. Noel has offered to allow students to write and record their pieces at lunch or after school if they ask Mr. Noel at least 2 days in advance and bring your own blank CDs for the recordings.  Please try to avoid a last minute rush before the deadline.

Musical Notation: Finale offers a free, introductory program in musical notation called Notepad. You can download it at http://www.finalemusic.com/. Upgrades are available online or from a dealer.  Mr. Noel also has software in the music room.  Please coordinate use of the software with Mr. Noel.

Recommendations for Quality Recordings: Make the room you record in as quiet as possible. Close windows and turn off all noise-making devices such as air conditioners, fans, telephones, etc. Do not place the recording device on top of an instrument or speaker. If you are recording on a cassette, use Dolby B Noise Reductions. Don’t record at too loud a level (in the red zone on the meter) or too soft (meter barely moving). Record a short test and listen to it, while watching the meter. If needed, improve recording quality by changing the recording volume or microphone location. If using tape, rewind to the beginning, record 15 seconds of silence, and then begin performing your composition. Finish with another 15 seconds of silence. CD submissions may reduce silence to two seconds.

There are also local studios who will record your music for a fee. Most studios can record live music or make a recording from an electronic file (for the composition category). Check the yellow pages under Musical Production Services and ask for a student discount. Deva Productions in Lafayette may be helpful.
