Special Tips For Music Entries:
JM Studio: Mr. Noel has offered to allow students to write and record their pieces at lunch or after school if they ask Mr. Noel at least 2 days in advance and bring your own blank CDs for the recordings. Please try to avoid a last minute rush before the deadline.
Musical Notation: Finale offers a free, introductory program in musical notation called Notepad. You can download it at http://www.finalemusic.com/. Upgrades are available online or from a dealer. Mr. Noel also has software in the music room. Please coordinate use of the software with Mr. Noel.
Recommendations for Quality Recordings: Make the room you record in as quiet as possible. Close windows and turn off all noise-making devices such as air conditioners, fans, telephones, etc. Do not place the recording device on top of an instrument or speaker. If you are recording on a cassette, use Dolby B Noise Reductions. Don’t record at too loud a level (in the red zone on the meter) or too soft (meter barely moving). Record a short test and listen to it, while watching the meter. If needed, improve recording quality by changing the recording volume or microphone location. If using tape, rewind to the beginning, record 15 seconds of silence, and then begin performing your composition. Finish with another 15 seconds of silence. CD submissions may reduce silence to two seconds.
There are also local studios who will record your music for a fee. Most studios can record live music or make a recording from an electronic file (for the composition category). Check the yellow pages under Musical Production Services and ask for a student discount. Deva Productions in Lafayette may be helpful.
