A little history
For years several teachers and their students have worked in the gardens around campus, primarily in the compost area, behind the science building, in the CORE corner, and in some other beds. Most of this work is done during lunch hour or as part of science. With a link to Bridges, students are doing more community service in the JM gardens.
During the 2010-2011 year, a new garden area was developed. The scope of the job was enormous.Elaine Guttmann and Dawn Lezak were responsible for coordinating workers, volunteers, and students in this endeavor. Initially, the district leveled an area adjacent to the fields behind the CORE building. Tri-City Fencing was hired to build a fence, and a 20-foot container was purchased as an on-site storage facility. Fortunately, two Boy Scouts stepped forward to work on their Eagle Projects.Griffin Piatt created five robust Sunset Magazine design redwood planters, and Oliver Park constructed five benches for teachers to use to accommodate students in an "outdoor classroom."The Kiwanis Club arrived in the spring to trench and lay all the piping necessary for present and future irrigation. They installed the sprinklers and timers and created a large box over the manifold system. They not only donated close to 100 man hours, but also funded this project, which cost around $1200.
